A SCHEME to cut alcohol-related crime has been named the best in the UK.
Durham City's Best Bar None initiative beat off competition from 94 rivals across the country to scoop the prize.
Sergeant Steven Norris of Durham Police said: "Our scheme looks at everything involved in running licensed premises and encourages best practice in as many areas as possible.
"It has made the city centre a safer and more enjoyable experience and there is now international interest into how these schemes are run."
Carol Feenan, Best Bar None manager, said: "It is a resounding endorsement for all the hard work of the participating licensees."
Along with the prestige of the prize, Durham will get £1,500 and to host a national conference next year.
The scheme, run by the police and Durham County Council, started two years ago and includes 75 per cent of all the city's bars, including university colleges.
Earlier this year, The Loft, on North Road, was stripped of its Best Bar None award after offering visitors all they could drink for £10.
But alcohol-related crime in Durham has dropped by 35 per cent and premises takings are up 28 per cent.
Officials say the £1,500 prize will be used to create a Best Bar None website.
Sgt Norris said he hoped the 13 pubs in Durham outside the scheme would join in the coming year.
