FRANK MALONEY will not rush into making Tony Jeffries a short-term champion, despite being accused of lining up another “pudding” for the super-middleweight.

Jeffries, an Olympic bronze medallist, is looking to extend his unbeaten start to the professional game to four fights tomorrow night when he fights Belarusian champion Artem Solomko at Sunderland’s Seaburn Centre.

The contest will represent a step up for Jeffries with his first six-round contest having comfortably won his opening three bouts since turning his back on the amateur ranks.

Nevertheless, promoter Maloney is still being urged in some quarters to pair the Olympian with more renowned opponents.

“I do think this is a good opponent he’s got and if he does a demolition job on this guy I’ve got to sit down and think, ‘Bloody hell, there’s something special here’,” said Maloney.

“I do think we’ve got something special here. His body punching is developing well, his belief is the most important thing.

“Everyone has a different opinion. I look on the internet on the forums and some fans say, ‘you can’t rush him too quick’ and others say, ‘Maloney’s given him another pudding to knock over’.”

Maloney and Phil Jeffries, his father and manager, are sticking to a plan – and that includes travelling around the country after tomorrow night.

“This time next year we should be on the fringes of Commonwealth titles or international titles, within another six months the British title. So we are going the right way,” said Maloney.

“But I’d like to see how we go about this first,” said Maloney.

“The board of control actually said to me, ‘This guy looks a bit dangerous for your normal match-making, Frank.’ I said to them, ‘I can’t win, can I?’ “To get Tony to where I want him, I have to take him outside of the North-East and give some of the other people in Britain a chance to see him.”

Solomko, 29, is five years Jeffries’ senior and has won ten of his 27 bouts as a professional.

The six-rounder will follow tomorrow night’s Sky televised British super bantamweight title showdown between Hartlepool’s Michael Hunter and champion Jason Booth.

■ Tickets for tomorrow night’s event are still on sale priced between £35 and £90.
