A CANINE cornucopia took over a countryside walk as owners and their pets stepped out for charity yesterday.
About 100 dogs and their handlers strolled around Chester-le-Street’s Riverside walk as part of Paws for a Cause, the first sponsored dog walk in aid of St Cuthbert’s Hospice, in Durham City. Dogs of all shapes and sizes took part and a familiar face among the walkers was Philippa Tomson, of Tyne Tees TV, who was with her six-yearold Tibetan terrier, BG. “He was a bit gobby when we first set off,” said the dogloving weather and news presenter. “There were a couple of boxer dogs he didn’t take kindly to, but he’s all mouth and no trousers, and soon backed off.
“It’s been absolutely lovely, such a nice event and wonderful atmosphere, and all for a worthy cause.”
First to complete the route, in just under an hour, was Angela Kelly, from Sacriston, County Durham, with her five-year-old cross breed, Alan Shearer, fittingly sporting his own Newcastle United shirt.
Ms Kelly, based with the Army at Catterick, in North Yorkshire, said: “Shearer has raised more than £300, so I’m really proud that he’s done his bit for a good cause.”
The event raised up to £9,000.
