DETECTIVES investigating an apparent hit-and-run, in which a ten-year-old boy was killed, have renewed an appeal for information about the crash.

Sean Hamilton, from York, died after being hit by a van as he crossed the city's Holgate Road on October 3.

Police want to hear from the drivers or passengers of four vehicles known to be in the area at about the time of the collision.

A spokeswoman for North Yorkshire Police said: "The occupants of these vehicles are yet to come forward with any information they may have.

"Police would like to trace three vehicles that were travelling into York, on Holgate Road, at about 7.20pm on Saturday, October 3.

"They are a dark-coloured saloon car, similar to the size of a Vauxhall Vectra; a dark-coloured saloon car, which is believed to be a private hire car with white plates across the doors, and a light coloured small 4x4 Freelander-type vehicle.

"They would also like to speak to the occupants of the vehicle which was travelling out of York behind the Transit van involved in the collision.

"The occupants did stop at the crash scene, but they are yet to make themselves known to the police."

A team of police community support officers, from the York safer neighbourhood team, visited the crash site on Saturday evening, to appeal for witnesses and information.

The spokeswoman added: "It is essential that police are assisted in gaining this information, so officers can establish a full picture of what happened surrounding the collision."

Since the tragedy, a special assembly in memory of Sean has been held in his school, Our Lady's Roman Catholic School, in York, to help his classmates come to terms with his death.

Counsellors have been brought in to help youngsters to express their grief.

In a statement, Sean's parents, Ronnie and Sharon, paid tribute to their son.

They said: "He was full of fun, always laughing and joking and was a very popular boy, who was liked by everyone who knew him."

Five local men, aged between 16 and 22, who were arrested after the incident, remain on police bail pending further inquiries.
