THOUSANDS of people turned out this morning to watch the world's best cyclists leave a North-East town on the second stage of the Tour of Britain.

Ninety-six of the world's best riders took off on the 152.3km stage to Gateshead from Darlington at 10.15am, cheered on by a 3,000-strong crowd.

Among the competitors were Olympic gold medalist Bradley Wiggins, whose Garmin teammate Chris Sutton won the opening Scunthrope to York stage yesterday, and Middlesbrough-born Chris Newton, competing for Rapha Condor.

Leading the elite cyclists out were female cyclists, including women and girls from Darlington's Beauty and the Bike project and chief executive of Darlington Borough Council Ada Burns.
