MOTORISTS are been warned about a dangerous stretch of road which claimed two more lives in a fatal crash in the region.

North Yorkshire Police have issued the warning after two men died in the crash on the A64 near to York.

Darren Mark Towey, 35, of Leeds, and Thomas Cross, 39, from Keighley, West Yorkshire, died in the accident.

A Vauxhall Corsa and a Land Rover Discovery collided at Barton-le-Willows, near to Malton, on Tuesday, August 18.

The road in that area has been the scene for a number of accidents and campaigners are calling for it to be made safer.

Traffic Sergeant Richard Parsons, of North Yorkshire Police, said: "This stretch of road is one of the busiest in North Yorkshire because it is the main route leading to holiday destinations such as Scarborough.

"People need to drive carefully and to drive to the conditions of the road and within the speed limit at all times."

Emergency services were sent to Tuesday’s crash scene at 4.25pm found a blue Land Rover towing a trailer with a speedboat and the red Vauxhall.

The Land Rover driven by Mr Cross was heading west and the police think the driver lost control and collided with the central reservation.

The Vauxhall driven by Mr Towey was going east when the accident took place and it left the road due to the crash.

The York and North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce also wants the road improving and dualling along its entire length.

The York-based group feels this would improve safety and would attract business to the area.

North Yorkshire Police have not yet identified either driver and enquiries are still taking place.

Anyone who can help with the investigation should call the York Road Policing Group on 0845-6060-247 or Crimestoppers on 0800-555-111.
