The Wimbledon men's final between Roger Federer and Andy Roddick was sporting drama at its most memorable.
There are moments in sport which are unforgettable - and that was one of them as Federer won his 15th Grand Slam to become the greatest player of all time.
But why, oh why, didn't the Wimbledon officials have the sense to allow Pete Sampras to hand over the trophy to the man who had just beaten his record?
Sampras, who won 14 Grand Slams, including seven Wimbledon singles titles, had flown over from California to be there for the historic final.
He watched from the royal box and I was convinced he would appear alongside the Duke of Kent to present the trophy.
The fans would have loved it, Federer would have loved it, and it would have sealed a perfect sporting moment.
But we were left with the usual, run of the mill, ceremony, with the Duke of Kent doing the honours.
With all due respect to the duke, Sampras would have made it so much more special.
