FILMS showing one of the most striking exhibits on display in a North-East museum at work are being shown alongside the piece itself.
Snow and Snowdrift at Bleath Gill are showing at Locomotion: The National Railway Museum at Shildon, County Durham.
North Eastern Railway Snowplough No 12, built at the North Eastern Railway’s Gateshead works in 1891 and currently on display at Locomotion, is shown in action in the British Transport Films.
Snow, made in 1963, follows railway men, trains and travellers in a battle against the elements.
The film, which lasts for eight minutes, is a montage of individual clips showing the battle to keep lines clear for cargo and passengers.
Snowdrift at Bleath Gill, from 1955, tells the story of a freight train travelling between Kirkby Stephen and Barnard Castle that becomes snowbound in the Westmorland hills.
Motive Power operating and engineering departments – with men from across Cumbria and south west Durham, including Darlington and West Auckland – rescue the trapped train.
The museum is open daily from 10am to 5pm, and admission and parking is free. For more information call 01388-777999.
