THE sun shone on pupils, parents, and staff during the long-awaited opening of a new school field in Crook.
North West Durham MP Hilary Armstrong officially launched the new facility at St Cuthbert’s RC Primary School today, followed by an afternoon of sports, games, and races.
The field, which has been cut into a hillside behind the school buildings, has taken a year to mature and level off.
Ms Armstrong said: "The new school building was opened last year, but the children have been unable to use the field until now. It is an excellent facility, and has lovely views across the countryside."
Headteacher Barbara Simpson added: "I am very excited and happy to see it in use, because it has taken five years to get to this stage, and this has been our first sports day for three years.
"It makes a big difference working in a pleasant environment, and the children love it."
