A HEAD teacher is to retire after seven years at the helm.

Maureen Bates, head of St Bede’s, Lanchester, marked the occasion with a Mass and social evening held at the school on June 23.

Bishop Seamus Cunningham, Catholic Bishop of Hexham and Newcastle Diocese, said: “You helped the pupils of this school to recognise their gifts and talents and encouraged them to use them to the best of their ability.

“You’ve reached out to those of low self-esteem and brought about a transformation in their lives. We thank God for choosing you for the teaching profession. You have touched the lives of so many by answering that call.”

Pupils Anna Costello, from Year 12 and Conor Robinson, from Year 11, gave a presentation on the difference their head had made to students.

Mrs Bates said: “I feel quite touched and overwhelmed by the Mass, and by everyone being here. I have a great sense of gratitude to everybody”

“I think teaching is a wonderful profession: to get to know so many young people and have the opportunity to influence their lives is a massive responsibility, but it is also hugely rewarding.

“St Bede’s is a great school community and I have tried to build on all the great strengths of the school and all the work of previous governors, headteachers and staff.

“I have always said that I feel privileged to be part of our school for the time that I have been here.”

Mrs Bates was presented with an original painting of St Bede, by Durham University’s artist in residence, Judy Hurst.
