AS temperatures go through the roof those seeking to cool down are being urged to take great care by rivers, lakes and reservoirs.

The Yorkshire Ambulance Service made its plea amid fears that the number of people requiring emergency treatment because of water-related incidents could rise.

Assistant director of operations Vince Larvin said: "The county’s waterways and lakes are a popular destination for people in hot weather, which can make them a dangerous place for those who take risks.

"This summer, we have already been called to many incidents across the county where people have acted thoughtlessly.

"It may be very tempting to jump into the water to cool off on a hot summer’s day but people need to be aware of how dangerous it really is."

He said that while water could look calm on the surface it could contain unseen debris - and rivers in particular can have treacherous undercurrents.

And even on a hot day the temperature of the water is much colder than people expect so the body can go into shock very quickly, causing respiratory problems.
