AN RAF air traffic controller is changing gear to take on one of the toughest sporting challenges in Britain.
Sergeant Mal Rose, who is based at RAF Linton-on-Ouse, near York, is in training for the Tri-UK Ironman Challenge, in Bolton on August 2, to raise money for services charity Help for Heroes.
Sgt Rose, originally from Coulby Newham, near Middlesbrough, will swim 2.5 miles and cycle 112 miles on a bike before completing a full 26 mile marathon.
He said: "This is my first attempt at Ironman distance. Training for such an arduous event takes up all of my spare time and energy, but at least I can enjoy replacing all those spent calories guilt free."
Sgt Rose has been competing in triathlons for four years and in his youth was a member of the Mandale Harriers, winning the Middlesbrough Schools cross country title two years in a row.
