A councillor has hailed the help of local businesses in saving a community event with more than 25 years of history from the effects of the credit crunch.

The Northallerton Carnival will see a fun fair, street entertainers and charity stalls fill the town’s High Street, which will be closed off to traffic for the event on Sunday, July 12.

A decline in visitor numbers in recent years and the recession had led to fears that the carnival might have to be scrapped, but local businesses, including Northallerton- based Simon Bailes Peugeot, which has stepped in as main sponsor for the event, have saved it from closure.

Carnival chairman, Councillor David Blades, said: "During these more difficult economic times it's crucial that we offer the community these fun events, but it just would not be possible without the support of local businesses."

The Carnival runs between 12-5pm on Sunday, July 12, along Northallerton High Street.
