Here are some more comments that have arrived about Eastbourne School in Darlington.

Mr RW West, who describes himself as an "old Eastbourne lad", says: "I think a good idea would be to convert the school into a town hall, it would have more dignity than the monstrosity near the market square - pull that down instead."

It has to be said that the Town Hall is not the finest example of architecture in Darlington, although it will be interesting to see whether opinions of it weather as time moves on. Perhaps if it is threatened with demolition in 100 years time, a history group will campaign to save this rare example of late 1960s architecture?

Anyway, back to the letters. A "concerned ex-pupil" writes: "Eastbourne Secondary Modern School, as it was from 1936, was a fascinating building. It is a remarkable sight to see, set in its own surrounding land. I am sure most ex-pupils, like myself, would rather see the school put to good use, as it deserves. Part of it could be the basis for a museum of education in Darlington, of which there is a very long history. Other rooms could be for art and crafts, studies, offices, various clubs/meetings. The list goes on and on. If this school goes, there is nothing left in our town to equal this wonderful building, and we would lose something very special indeed."
