AN adventure world of flora and fauna could soon spring up under new plans to transform a south Durham woodland.
Residents of Auckland Park, Bishop Auckland, will be instrumental in shaping the future of the woodland planted on the site of old pit cottages in Thomas Street, Dene Valley.
The wood, which is already used by children and walkers, could be transformed and taken over by Dene Valley Parish Council under plans being developed by environmental regeneration charity Groundwork.
Residents heard full details of the £78,000 scheme at a consultation event held in Prince Bishops Community Primary School.
The initiative proposes keeping and improving the woodland setting for adventure play and other uses.
Groundwork propose encouraging woodland flowers and wildlife, using materials from the wood to create outdoor art, developing meandering paths and seating areas and forming glades for activities such as picnics and storytelling.
Groundwork project officer Joanne Morley said: "The response we received was extremely positive.
"Generally people liked the ideas. We will now present our findings to the parish council to see how they would like to proceed and how we can address issues raised by residents."
