OPEN GARDENS: A dozen houses in Newton-le-Willows will take part in an open gardens event on Sunday, from 2pm to 5pm. Proceeds in aid of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and village hall funds. Home made teas will be served from 1.30pm. Admission costs £3.50 for adults and £1 for children aged eight to 16.

COFFEE MORNING: There will be a coffee morning in Newton-le-Willows village hall on Saturday, July 11, from 10am to noon. Proceeds to be shared between village hall funds and St Patrick's Church.

SUMMER FAIR: Aiskew, Leeming Bar CE Primary School holds its summer fete on Saturday, July 11, from noon to 3pm. Attractions at the ‘healthy living’ themed fete include a children’s obstacle course, bouncy castle, dog agility display, coconut shy, tombola, smoothie stall.

CHURCH SERVICE: Northallerton United Reformed Church will hold its morning service at 10am, on Sunday. The service will be led by Christine Martin.

HALL SALE: A table-top sale will be held at Northallerton town hall on Saturday, July 11, from 9am to noon. Entry is free. Refreshments available. Proceeds to East Cowton Primary School. Stalls will include cakes, toys, books, bric-a-brac, plants, produce and a tombola.

SUMMER CONCERT: The Bedale Festival Choir is presenting a Summer concert of light music in St Gregory’s Church, on Saturday, at 7.30pm. There will be no admission charge, but donations in aid of The British Heart Foundation will be collected. The committee of Bedale Festival Choir had the idea of not charging an entrance fee and asking for charitable donations as a way of encouraging more people to listen to the small, but enthusiastic, choir. The choir will later record carols for a new production of "Scrooge". This will be held in December, again in St Gregory’s Church.

CHRISTIAN AID: The annual meeting of the Bedale and District Christian Aid Committee will be held at the annexe of Bedale Methodist Church, in Wycar, on Thursday, July 23, at 7.30pm. Anyone interested in the work of Christian Aid is very welcome to attend.

CLUB WINNERS: The award winners in Bedale Squash Club’s recent annual tournament included Joe Vernon (under 17s), Carol Peirson (ladies vets), Rosie Allison (junior handicap), Andrea Offord (ladies open), Dave Smiley (mens open), Dave Wheatley (mens plate), Alan Peirson (mens vets), Jamie Barr (Under 14s), Anne Weatherill (ladies plate).

GLADIATOR CHALLENGE: Adventure centre Aerial Extreme, in Bedale, is holding its summer barbecue on Saturday. The park is open from 10am to 7pm. Staff are looking for contestants to tackle the course as part of a Gladiator-themed competition. Prizes include tickets to the Forbidden Corner, near Leyburn, and passes to Lightwater Valley. In addition, activity days at Carlton Lodge are up for grabs - and plenty more to be confirmed. The event will be in aid of Aerial Extreme's chosen charity for the year - Martin House Hospice. FUN DAY: A family fun day will be held at Bedale High School, on Sunday, July 12, at 2pm. The event is being held as part of the school’s 50th anniversary celebrations, with a large number of former pupils expected to attend. A team of old boys will take on present-day students and teachers at cricket. There will also be a tombola, raffle, afternoon teas, barbecue, bouncy castle, stalls, Pimms bar, tuck shop, strawberries and cream and sideshows. Everyone is welcome.
