A GIRLS’ school will mark 30 years of choral singing next month - by performing the world premiere of a new piece of music composed especially for the anniversary.
Leading British composer Francis Pott has written a piece of music for the 24-strong Chapel Choir at Queen Mary’s School at Topcliffe, near Thirsk.
And the choir will sing "Laus Trinitati" for the very first time at a concert at Ripon’s Holy Trinity Church at the beginning of July.
The school runs four choirs for pupils of all ages and its Chapel Choir has built up a reputation for excellence, performing regularly outside school and competing successfully in local and national events.
The commissioning of the new piece of music is part of a series of celebrations to mark the 30th anniversary of the school choirs being formed by director of music Nicholas Carter.
Mr Carter said: "It is very exciting to have such a fantastic piece written specially for us. It is full of dancing vitality and the girls are really enjoying learning it."
At the concert on July 8, the Chapel Choir will also be performing Bob Chilcott’s Little Jazz Mass and the 55-strong Senior Choir will sing Vivaldi’s ‘Gloria’.
The school’s current senior music scholar, Chloe Elenor, will be performing a movement of Carl Stamitz’s Flute Concerto in D.
Tickets for the concert, which starts at 7.30pm, are available from Queen Mary’s School on 01845-575000 or on the door.
