POSSIBLE sites for three new academy schools have been revealed.

Durham County Council has identified two options for a Durham City academy, two for a Consett academy and one for a Stanley academy.

The £75m scheme would see six secondary schools closed, two in each of the towns involved, but has faced opposition from teachers, parents and residents.

Parents and carers at the schools affected are being given the chance to give their views on the potential sites.

In Durham, the options are: ● The existing Belmont School site, including its separate playing field near the A1(M); ● The playing field near the A1(M) and across the road, near Belmont Community Centre.

In Consett, the options are: ● The Belle Vue site, next to the leisure centre, between Villa Real Road and Ashdale Road; ● A Crookhall site, between the Consett bypass, Gloucester Road and Delves Lane.

The council says only one site in Stanley is suitable – the former Kings Head sports field, off High Street/Chester Road.

Councillor Claire Vasey, cabinet member for children and young people’s services, said: “The development of academies in County Durham will bring exceptional facilities and opportunities for young people.

“Deciding on locations for the academies is a very important part of the process and we look forward to receiving feedback from people on the possible sites we have identified.”

The closing date for responses is Friday, July 3.

The academies, which could be opened by September 2012, would be co-sponsored by an educational body – a Durham University-led consortium in the case of Durham and Consett; and in Stanley, New College Durham. For details, go to durham.gov.uk
