THERE were colourful scenes on one of the region’s rivers at the weekend, as council workers took part in a dragon boat regatta.
Staff from local authorities including Darlington, Middlesbrough and Sunderland joined the light-hearted fun on the River Wear, in Durham City, on Saturday. There were races between 10am and 3pm, followed by presentations and prize giving.
The event was run by business advisors Deloitte to raise money for the North of England Children’s Cancer Research Fund and Newcastle RVI’s children’s cancer ward.
The event was the latest in a string of boat races in Durham. The previous weekend, the city welcomed thousands of rowers and spectators for the 176th Durham Regatta.
In April, Durham Amateur Rowing Club hosted an event that gave families the opportunity to try out dragon boats.
Last month, the River Tyne, in Newcastle, was the venue as Newcastle University students upset the form book to beat their Durham University rivals in the annual North-East university boat race.
