A TEENAGER was due to undergo emergency surgery today after being impaled on a metal fence.
The 18-year-old man got stuck while climbing over a fence in Newbottle Street, Houghton-le-Spring, Wearside, in the early hours of Sunday morning.
He slipped and the fence pierced his thigh.
Firefighters from Rainton Bridge were called to the scene at 3.20am.
They cut the fence to release him, while he was held up on a stretcher.
The man was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital with part of the fence still attached.
