A LOCAL MP has criticised the Government for failing to support her bill on penalising shoplifters with harsher sentences.
Anne McIntosh, the Vale of York MP, hoped for a second reading of her Theft from Shops (Use of Penalty Notices for Disorder) Act in the House of Commons last week.
She claims the move was blocked as two earlier bills were talked out by ministers leaving her no time.
Miss McIntosh said: "In supporting the bill, the Government would have recognised the severity of shop theft, particularly caused by persistent and repeat offenders.
"By allowing Health Minister Ann Keen, and Defence Minister Kevin Jones to talk out two earlier bills on autism and pensions for war widows, the Government has badly let down retailers and the many other victims of retail crime.
"I know they will share my disappointment at the Government’s failure to support this bill.
"The bill has an opportunity for Second Reading on Friday, July 3, but I fear that the Government will employ similar tactics on that occasion."
