GARAGES which were daubed with graffiti have been cleaned up, thanks to a neighbourhood warden, councillors and church volunteers.
Durham County Council warden Natalie Davies has been working for 18 months to make 14 garages on Chillingham Road, in Newton Hall, Durham, more presentable.
As the garages were privately owned, Ms Davies had to track down each owner to get permission for the work.
But she after finally got the go ahead, students and young people from King's Church, Durham, signed up for the clean up.
Ms Davies said: "It's taken a long time, but now work is underway, I know it will transform the area."
The materials for the project were provided by Newton Hall councillors Mamie Simmons and Amanda Hopgood.
Coun Hopgood said: "I am really delighted to have these great volunteers where the council has no empowerment to act.
"This is a busy walkway and has been an eyesore for a long time so this will be really significant for many local people."
