TENS of thousands of people are expected to visit the famous Hoppings which opens for business in Newcastle tomorrow.

Northumbria Police say they hope the annual funfair, which runs from June 19 to 27 on the Town Moor, will be another peaceful event.

However, the force says its officers will be out and about so that effective action is taken against anyone involved in crime in the run up to the fair or during the event itself.

Uniformed patrols, plain clothes police, Community Support Officers and motor patrols will be working to ensure a peaceful event and reassure visitors and residents who live nearby.

Neighbourhood Inspector for the area, Ronnie Lowes, said: "Thousands of people visit the fair every day and the vast majority are out to enjoy themselves.

"There are a few who cause trouble and these are the ones we will be looking out for.

"We will be monitoring the fair and dealing firmly with anyone intent on spoiling the enjoyment of others at the Hoppings or anyone causing a nuisance to residents."
