A WOULD-BE vet on work experience found herself watching surgeons trying to save the life of a dog.

Heather Ealand, a student at Risedale Sports and Community College, Hipswell, Catterick Garrison, saw the operation at the Swale Veterinary Surgery, in Richmond.

The animal had badly injured its leg but the vets managed to save its life with an amputation rather than putting it down.

Heather said: "The dog handled the operation really well and went home the day after.

"It was an amazing experience for me and has helped me decide on my future career as a vet."

She was amongst 100 youngsters from the college who spent a week taking part in an array of work experience jobs.

Helen Porritt, the year team manager, said: "It was the first time they had seen how businesses were run, and for some, working life was a real culture shock.

"They were amazed at how much went on and it gave them a chance to experience what life is like in the outside world.

"Work experience can be life-changing for young people as it helps them choose the right path for them."
