VILLAGERS are backing a cash crusade in aid of a hospital that saved a grandmother-of-five’s life.

Cancer survivor Kathleen Herron is heading a campaign to support The James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough.

Almost a year ago, the 54-year-old, from Fishburn, County Durham, had half a lung removed and underwent chemotherapy to beat lung cancer.

To thank staff at James Cook hospital for their support during treatment, and to help other patients, she is raising money for its chemotherapy ward.

Family and friends from the Fishburn and Trimdon area are backing her efforts, because it is a cause close to many of their hearts.

Mrs Herron said: “Six people in the same village either have, or have had, cancer – it touches so many people, so they want to help.”

The money raised will go towards new medical equipment and extra facilities, such a televisions, games and drinks machines.

Mrs Herron said: “The nurses on the ward are magnificent.

Whenever I felt rundown or depressed on chemo they would talk to me and help.

“They are as important for getting through it as the treatment itself.

“This money is to thank them, and give the people in there a little bit of pleasure.”

Fundraising events have included a sponsored walk, a jumble sale, a social night at Fishburn Workingmen’s Club, and on Saturday, friend Julie McHale ran the Swaledale Marathon to raise sponsorship for the campaign.

Mrs Herron estimates that more than £6,000 has been raised so far.

She said: “My daughter, Vicky Emmerson, and son Andrew, have been very supportive, and my friends have been marvellous throughout.

“I cannot thank local people and small businesses enough for their help.”
