PLANS to expand a long-established service station beside the A1 have been drawn up.

The owners of Leeming Bar Services, near Northallerton, North Yorkshire, say their proposal would create 50 jobs.

The plans include improved parking and a new filling station, enhanced baby care and washing facilities, and a nature reserve and play area.

Owner Carl Les said the workforce would double to more than 100 if the proposals were approved.

He said: “The arrival of the A1 motorway brings a real opportunity for us to expand the service which we offer to motorists and the local community, while retaining the character of the operation.

“My family has owned Leeming Bar Services since it opened in 1961, and we think these plans will transform the place, but keep the best features intact.

“Having been here for almost 50 years, we have a long-standing commitment to the community, and that will continue with the expansion as we stick by our policy to use local suppliers wherever we can in all of our outlets.”

He said that ten per cent of the additional staff would be offered apprenticeships.

He said: “It’s a policy which has paid off over the years, since many of our current staff have been with us for more than 15 years and most come from Bedale and the surrounding villages.”

The plans come as the Highways Agency starts work to upgrade the Barton to Dishforth section of the A1 from a two-lane dual carriageway to a threelane motorway.

Under the plans, Leeming Bar’s existing cafe and restaurant would remain, as would the Yorkshire Maid Shop and the recently refurbished 39- bedroom hotel.

There will be improved parking arrangements, with dedicated areas for cars, coaches and lorries, and more spaces for disabled drivers.

A nature reserve would be built with new trees, ponds and more play areas.

Mr Les said: “This is a sustainable solution that will allow an existing business, built on good service, to carry on doing a good job in providing for the needs of passing motorists.”

The plans have been submitted to Hambleton District Council.
