ONE of the kings of storytellers had a new throne to sit on when he entertained North-East children.
North Yorkshire schools inspector turned children’s author Gervase Phinn was the first person to spin yarns from a story seat designed by pupils at Coundon St Joseph’s RC Primary School, in County Durham.
The seat was made by metal sculptor Graeme Hopper, from Crook, using the children’s ideas and drawings.
He decorated it with favourite characters, such as Humpty Dumpty, Rapunzel and Incy Wincy Spider, and installed it in the playground.
Headteacher Stefa McManners said the seat had already fired the children’s imagination.
“They love it,” she said. “They really enjoy reading and making up stories and this is perfect for them.
“Mr Phinn was the first person to use the seat because he was here for a day of workshops.
“We are really pleased with it. It is fantastic.”
