FAMOUS characters from yesteryear invaded a Teesdale village when it held its annual carnival at the weekend.
The two-day event in Bowes, near Barnard Castle, started with a fancy dress parade and competition on Saturday.
Entrants stuck to the historical characters theme, with inventive costumes including Sherlock Holmes, Greek goddesses, Boudicca and a team of Antarctic explorers.
Throughout Saturday there was a host of family entertainment, including music from Barnard Castle Brass Band.
Yesterday was the village sports day, with welly-wanging and other traditional events including three-legged and egg and spoon races.
Rosie Bettison secretary of the carnival committee, said: “Everyone seemed to enjoy both days and the good weather helped.
“The atmosphere was lovely.
“On Saturday, people of all ages joined the parade and there was samba music, a brass band and children’s entertainers Bell and Bullock.
“Yesterday’s sports were great fun. They start young round here as we had a 14-month-old toddler in the wellywanging.
“We’ve a great committee and received a £2,100 grant from County Durham Foundation for new bunting, a tent and banner which makes a huge difference for a small group like us.”
