THOUSANDS of people stepped out at the weekend to take part in the Diabetes UK Great North Walk.
The walk took a picturesque ten-mile route in and around Sunderland – beginning and ending at the former colliery site of Herrington Country Park, between Chester-le-Street and Sunderland.
Walkers were able to get close to the iconic Penshaw Monument and wander the banks of the River Wear during the event, yesterday.
A shorter, three-and-a-half mile walk also took place for children and wheelchair users.
Diabetes UK regional manager Linda Wood said: “It was a fantastic day with beautiful weather.
“About 2,500 people took part. The ten-mile walk was quite challenging, but people enjoyed it.
“All ages took part – from babes in arms upwards.”
Ms Wood said the event last year had raised £25,000 for Diabetes UK and organisers were hoping to equal, if not better, the result this year.
She added that Diabetes UK still had places available for anyone who wished to take part in the Bupa Great North Run on September 20, and raise money for the charity.
Anyone who is interested is asked to call 01325-488606. Entries have to be submitted by July 10.
