Local leagues preview

LONG unbeaten records are up for grabs today in the Dukes North-East Regional Premier League.

Blaydon entertain South North in an encounter between two sides who have not been beaten in league matches since May 2008.

The Bulls record stretches to 23 matches, and includes 13 wins and 10 draws, while Blaydon have had 17 draws in their 24 match run, including a staggering 13 consecutive stalemates at the end of last season.

Mark Stoneman will be a big miss for the home team, although Steven Gale returns after his holidays, however the champions also have their absentees with Adam Cragg and Richard Brook unavailable.

Tom Seymour and 18-year-old all-rounder Chris Goodfellow step up.

Chester-le-Street will be desperately hoping Blaydon extend their unbeaten record as it will provide a further opportunity for them to cut the 23- point gap when they take on the Durham Academy at Maiden Castle.

Luke Evans will be available for the Cestrians, whilst the Academy only have Jamie Harrison missing.

Boldon’s leadership of the Warmseal Durham Senior League could face its stiffest examination this afternoon when champions Burnmoor visit.

Both sides are undefeated this season and Boldon will be comforted by the fact they will have a full side in the field, while Burnmoor face a possible three changes with Michael Callaghan, Barry Dews and Graham Stoker all likely to be out.

Second-placed Whitburn have a home game to try and take advantage of any slip-ups.

They entertain Philadelphia although will do so without strike bowler Tony Greaves, his place is taken by Dan Quinan.

It’s time to sort the men from the boys in the Readers Durham County League as clubs face a crucial weekend double.

Esh Winning and Willington have particularly demanding games on both days. Before the pair meet head on tomorrow, Esh play at Kimblesworth today, as Willington entertain Crook.

And Esh will have to play both games without the influential Paul Chivers, John Parkinson replacing him today and Mark Davision tomorrow.

Willington, Kimblesworth and Crook have all announced full strength sides for both games, and leaders Shildon, who have two very winnable matches at Etherley and Brandon, are also at optimum level apart from Greg Upton’s absence this afternoon.

With runaway 3D Durham Coast League leaders Castle Eden sitting today’s programme out the chance is there for their rivals to make up ground.

Bill Quay will start as favourites at home to Silksworth, although batting sensation Shaun Smith will be missing, two full strength sides play at Washington where Peterlee are the visitors, and Ryhope entertain Dawdon.

Bottom club Ryton will have their strongest team for a while when they take on Tynedale in this afternoon’s Wellstream NTSL match.

Not only do they expect to have Ben Harmison available, but Paul Watson has recovered from his rib injury to lead the side, and Neil Robinson returns after being sidelined for six weeks with a dislocated shoulder.

Leaders Swalwell will parade new signing James Welch. The batsman has joined them from Benwell Hill and will play in the home match against Lintz.
