VOLUNTEERS from Ethiopia are to spend 12 weeks helping community organisations in Hartlepool.

The nine African participants are being joined by nine from across the UK to take part in the Global Xchange scheme.

The project, which is being run by Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) with British Council, will see the 18 volunteers work with various community organisations throughout the town until August.

The group met at youth organisation Cafe 177, on York Road today.

Manager of Cafe 177, Carol Newmarch, said: "We are looking forward to the exciting opportunities this programme will bring for our young people in Hartlepool.

"Cafe 177 is providing a base for the group and we will be running activities and events which will promote cultural understanding and global awareness, through music, food, visual and performing arts and sports."

The volunteers, aged between 18 and 25-years-old, will aim to promote international understanding throughout their stay as well as helping to develop young people’s skills and attitudes towards wider issues within the community.

Global Xchange are currently looking for local residents to house a pair of volunteers during their stay, one from the UK and one from Ethiopia.

They will be offered £85 per week to cover expenses and will be provided with full insurance and a programme supervisor.
