THE region’s highest-ranking churchman has added his support to the day that celebrates all things Yorkshire.
The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu will be taking part in the annual Yorkshire Day civic procession and service on August 1.
Ryedale District Council has accepted the invitation from the Yorkshire Society to host the events this year and the service will be held in St Michael’s Church, Malton.
Yorkshire Day is a celebration of all things Yorkshire and is designed to make people more aware of the county’s history and heritage.
August 1 was originally chosen as it was that day in 1759 when soldiers from the Yorkshire regiments who had fought in the battle of Minden in Germany picked white roses from bushes near to the battlefield as a tribute to their fallen comrades.
"We are delighted and honoured that Ryedale will be hosting this year’s Yorkshire Day and that the Archbishop of York has added his support to the day," said district council chairman Di Keal.
"Civic leaders from throughout Yorkshire will be coming to Malton for the special service however we will be using the day to showcase the whole of what Ryedale has to offer."
Yorkshire Society chairman Keith Madely said they would ensure different parts of the county were fully involved in the day’s celebrations and added that he was "thrilled" at the Archbishop’s participation.
