STAFF at a special school are leading the way on sex education.
The group from Elemore Hall School, in Pittington, have become the first in County Durham to gain a qualification in talking to children and young people about sex and relationships.
Their efforts have been recognised by Durham City MP Roberta Blackman-Woods, who visited to present certificates to 32 staff and the chair of governors.
Dr Blackman-Woods said: "It is fantastic news that Elemore Hall has a group of staff who have been proactive in taking up this course and will be able to help young people at the school."
The qualification, a Speakeasy course, is equivalent to two GCSEs at grades A* to C.
Elemore Hall takes pupils with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties.
Headteacher Richard Royle said: "The course was fantastic and enthusiastically received by all the staff involved.
"Making sure that all our teachers, learning support and care staff participated in the training ensures that the young people who attend the school have a wide range of adults that they can approach for support and guidance in this very important area."
