■ Ensure fruit trees and
bushes have enough water
while the fruit is setting
or the fruitlets may well
be shed.

matting to protect the
ripening fruit from mud
as well as slugs and other
pests.
■ Feed newly-shooting
hardy fuchsias with a
nitrogen-rich fertiliser
and keep the base free
from weeds.
■ Finish planting up patio
containers to give the plants
enough time to root and
grow well for summer.
■ Water hanging baskets
daily.
■ Sow French and runner
beans, and erect supports
for climbing beans.
■ Harden off aubergines,
courgettes, marrows,
peppers and tomatoes
grown from seed before
planting them outside.
■ Plant out sprouting
broccoli, Brussels sprouts
and summer cabbage.
■ Make more sowings
of carrots, turnips, beet,
lettuce, spinach and ridge
cucumbers.
