LITTLE-KNOWN Dane Jeppe Huldahl became the third shock winner on the European Tour in just four weeks at the Celtic Manor Wales Open.
Following Irish amateur Shane Lowry and world number 449 Christian Cevaer the 26-year-old ranked 377th beat Ryder Cup Swede Niclas Fasth by one – his first top 10 finish on the circuit in 45 attempts going back six years.
‘‘It feels amazing,’’ he said.
‘‘I couldn’t feel my hands the last three holes. I knew I was doing well, but I didn’t know how well until I asked my caddie on the 18th tee.’’ The £300,000 first prize was almost 30 times Huldahl’s previous biggest cheque, but he won in real style on the course which in October next year will stage America’s defence of the Ryder Cup.
Joint leader with England’s Nick Dougherty and Spaniard Ignacio Garrido with a round to play the 2008 Challenge Tour graduate did not drop a stroke in shooting a four under par 67.
Simon Dyson reaffirmed his place in the top 50 of the European Tour's Race to Dubai.
His reward for four rounds of steady golf at Celtic Manor was a sixth-place finish and a cheque of around £55,000.
He posted back-to-back 70s, two under, over the weekend, leaving him four shots adrift of Huldahl.
There was not so much joy for the other North-East golfers.
Robert Dinwiddie was made to pay for a poor weekend after a solid start in south Wales. Dinwiddie, from the Barnard Castle club, finished 75, 74 – ending on seven over – after two successive 71s had put him contention for a high finish. Hartlepool’s Graeme Storm missed the cut.
