A PEDESTRIAN who died in a weekend accident crossing a road near a city centre was today named as 47-year-old Nicholas Carthy.
He was certified dead at Durham's University Hospital of North Durham, late on Saturday night, following the accident Leazes Road, on the A690 in the city.
Mr Carthy, of Melgarve Drive, Moorside, Sunderland, suffered head and chest injuries in a collision with a Citroen C3 car as he crossed the dual carriageway near the Gilesgate roundabout.
The car driver, a 23-year-old man from Durham, and his passenger, a 26-year-old woman of the same address, were both said to be unhurt, although the vehicle was badly damaged.
It led to a four-hour closure of the A690 in the vicinity of the accident as police cleared the debris and began inquiries at the scene.
Durham Police accident investigators have appealed for information from anyone who may have been on the road around the time of the incident, at around 11.30pm.
They are asked to ring the accident investigation unit, on 0191-375-2159, or 0345-60-60-365.
