Dgiles,june7 echo durhamtimes durhamadvertiser A MAN crossing a road in the centre of Durham City was killed when he was struck by a car on Saturday night (june6) The victim has not been named by police investigating the accident but is said to be in his 40s.

A spokesman for Durham Constabulary said he was certified dead in the city’s University Hospital of North Durham after being hit by a car driving on the A690 near the Gilesgate roundabout.

The man, who was in the middle of the road, suffered head and chest injuries.

The driver of the car and a passenger was shocked but unhurt. The car was badly damaged.

The road was closed from 11.30pm on Saturday night until 3.30am on Sunday morning while accident investigators carried out their work.

Anyone who saw what happened is urged to call police on 0345 60 60 365.

*In a separate incident two women were cut free from the wreckage of a car that collided with another car at Consett.

The accident happened in Sherburn Terrace, Consett, at about 10.52pm on Saturday night and two crews were called to free the women who were then taken to University Hospital by ambulance.
