They must ask the Renegade 'are you the Real Radio Renegade' to win a bounty from £1,000 upwards.
Mr Gibbons, 20, was listening for clues on his mobile phone's radio while his girlfriend kept him updated with the Renegades twitter posts from their home in Spennymoor.
Mr Gibbons said: "The clues led me to the monument at Nevilles Cross in Durham and at first I couldn't see the Renegade so I ran around asking anyone I could find and the fifth person I asked was him!"
"Me and my girlfriend had already booked a holiday, so this money is a bit of a lifesaver, considering I have now lost my job. We are going to Egypt, so we can use the money to make sure we still get our holiday."
Lunchtimes with Lisa host, Lisa Shaw, said: "I'm really pleased for Paul. The fact that he and his girlfriend can still go on holiday because of the win, is just fantastic."
