The first case of swine flu has been confirmed in County Durham.

A woman who recently returned from the United States has been struck down by the virus.

Her symptoms are mild and she is recovering at home.

The diagnosis comes just hours after the MoD confirmed a soldier at Catterick Garrison has also contracted the virus.

In another development, workers due for redundancy at a North-East factory are being kept on to help produce swine flu vaccine.

GlaxoSmithKline received an order for 60 million vaccines for the disease from the British Government last month.

Millions of units have also been ordered by other European countries.
