THE second case of swine flu to hit North Yorkshire involves the son of an RAF family, it was confirmed yesterday.

The teenager is understood to be one of those to have picked up mild symptoms of the virus while at top public school Eton, in Berkshire.

The school has been closed because of the outbreak and the boy is now back at the family home in RAF Linton-on-Ouse, north of York.

He is not seriously ill and his case has no connection with North Yorkshire’s only other case of swine flu, a woman who also lives in the Hambleton area. She had recently returned from abroad and is said to be responding well to treatment.

The RAF said the new case had not hampered the running of the base and no other personnel or their families had been affected. The family were in quarantine at their home.

"It is believed the child contracted the virus while attending boarding school," said a spokesman.

"In accordance with national guidelines, the individual and their family have been offered anti-viral drugs. The individual has not been in contact with any other service personnel.

"RAF Linton-on-Ouse is working closely with the North Yorkshire and the Humber Health Protection Unit to ensure that all the appropriate action is taken.

"There is currently no impact on operations at RAF Linton-on-Ouse and no other reported cases affecting military personnel and their families."

He said the boy’s family chose to quarantine themselves voluntarily following the swine flu confirmation and had not been affected.
