PLANS to move a war memorial in an effort to make it more visible have been backed by councillors.
The parish memorial has stood in the grounds of St Mary Magdalene Church in Belmont, Durham, since it was erected shortly after the First World War.
The Friends of Belmont War Memorial want it moved to a nearby area of open grassland, off High Street, Carrville.
The main 3.75m obelisk bears the names of 87 people who died in the two world wars.
Plans are afoot to add two smaller pillars commemorating those who have lost their lives in more recent conflicts.
The area around the memorial will be paved to join the High Street footpath. It will include a brass plaque set in a sandstone plinth next to the paved entrance with trees and shrubs planted alongside.
The scheme was approved by members of Durham County Council’s Central and East Durham planning committee during a meeting at County Hall, Durham, on Tuesday.
