DETECTIVES are investigating the attempted abduction, by up to five men, of a 12-year-old boy in a market town in the region.
The boy’s ordeal happened as he walked to school, along Goosecroft Lane, in Northallerton, North Yorkshire, at about 8.25am on Monday.
A black BMW pulled up alongside him, close to the Mencap Centre.
A man got out of the rear passenger door, grabbed the boy by the hand and attempted to pull him into the car.
The boy managed to break free and ran to safety.
He reported the incident to staff at the Allertonshire School, in the town, who alerted police.
The car, a 5 Series with fivespoke alloy wheels, drove in and then out of Swain Court, close to the school.
It was last seen passing the Sainsbury’s supermarket, in the High Street, heading towards the level crossing.
The man who grabbed the boy was described as Asian, aged in his mid-30s, of muscular build, about 5ft 10in, with brown eyes, a pointy nose and a “dent” mark under his right eye.
He was wearing a dark suit and a pink tie.
There were up to four other men in the BMW. All are believed to be Asian and smartly dressed in suits and ties.
Detective Constable Jason Roper, of Northallerton CID, said: “This is clearly a very worrying and serious incident.
“I can assure parents, the school and the local community that we are doing everything we can to investigate it.
“While the boy escaped unharmed, thanks to his quickthinking actions, it was still a very upsetting experience for him.
“It is vital that we trace the suspects and the black BMW 5 Series as soon as possible. Even the smallest piece of information could prove useful, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch.”
North Yorkshire Police are working closely with Allertonshire School and other schools in the district to ensure pupils and parents are aware of the incident.
Families are being urged to impress on their children not to talk to strangers.
Witnesses are asked to call Det Con Roper on 0845-60-60-24-7, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800-555-111, reference number 12090091934.
