TWO baby meerkats are the latest additions to the Thorp Perrow Arboretum, in Bedale, arriving just in time for the first anniversary celebrations of the mammal centre.
The 12-day-old babies have not been named because staff at the centre do not know if they are male or female- they cannot touch them for the first few weeks in case their mother rejects or eats them.
Another new arrival is a female baby wallaby, which was finally pushed out of it’s mother’s pouch when she got sick of carrying it around.
When wallabies are born they are tiny and undeveloped and climb into the pouch where they can spend months maturing.
