A MYSTERY woman has won nearly £4m on the lottery – and pocketed an extra tenner in another stroke of good fortune.
She walked into a newsagent’s shop not knowing she had scooped the massive windfall in the Saturday, May 23, Lotto draw.
The shop’s owner, Ravi Handa, broke the news to her on Friday evening.
The total jackpot was £7.8m.
The Tyneside woman, believed to be in her 30s, matched six numbers. There was another jackpot winner so her share was just over £3.9m.
Then she went on to win £10 in Wednesday’s draw.
Mr Handa, owner of TC News, in Saville Street, North Shields, said: “The woman comes in almost every week. We don’t know if she bought the winning ticket here or from another shop.
“She came on Friday and asked me to check the numbers on her ticket. The machine said she had won. I first thought she had just matched five numbers and had won a couple of grand.
“But when I went on to check which number she had missed, I found she had matched six, hitting the jackpot. I couldn’t believe it.
“I took the customer aside and told her she had won £3.9m. She said: ‘Are you kidding?’ I said no, she had definitely won.
“But she stayed calm. She didn’t shout or scream or anything. I don’t think the news had sunk in and she left the shop in a state of disbelief.
“She also won £10 in Wednesday’s draw, winning twice in a week. She certainly is very lucky.”
It’s the first time a customer of TC News has won such a large amount.
Mr Handa added: “In the past we have had customers winning a few thousand but we have never had a jackpot winner taking away such a large amount.
“Everyone has been talking about it. It’s amazing.”
The winning numbers were 12, 17, 32, 41, 44 and 48. The bonus ball was 15.
Customer Terry Palmer, 59, of North Shields, is hoping some of the good luck will rub off on him. He said: “I buy lottery tickets here every week. I have won around £200 in the EuroMillions before and £10 here and there. Some of my friends have also won large amounts.
“But I’ve never myself won anything big. It’s brilliant that someone has won £4m, especially during the recession. Hearing news like that gives you the feel-good factor.”
Fellow customer Alan Shiel, 59, added: “I come to this shop three or four times a week. I put on the EuroMillions and both the Wednesday and Saturday draws.
“The most I have won in the past in £74. I was quite surprised to hear someone had won the jackpot here. I hope to get lucky myself.’’
