AN agricultural show will harness the power of young people to help raise funds for their adventures.
Organisers of the 31st North Yorkshire County Show, which takes place later this month, will be helped by two groups of teenagers – Explorer scouts who will sell programmes and help marshal car parking, and pupils from nearby Northallerton College, who will help set up show rings and act as runners for the judges on the day.
This year’s show is held on Sunday, June 14, at Otterington Hall, between Northallerton and Thirsk.
A donation from the show’s coffers will be used by the Vale of Mowbray Explorers, who meet at Nether Silton, near Thirsk, to help pay for an expedition to Switzerland next year.
A second donation will go towards the £45,000 the college pupils are trying to raise to pay for their 16-strong expedition to trek to Everest Base Camp in October.
The show’s joint secretary, Len Cragg, said: "The show committee is always keen to involve younger people.
"They may also pick up useful skills they can use in the future."
Entertainment will run from 8am, until the tug of war final at 5pm.
Haurel and Lardy, a Laurel and Hardy tribute act will entertain spectators with their slapstick antics.
Less sedate thrills will be provided by the X-Treme motorcycle stunt trials display team, as well as bungee trampolines.
Hounds from the Hurworth Hunt will also provide a main ring attraction, alongside other familiar favourites such as show jumping and heavy horses, traction engines, classic cars and motorcycles, classes for cattle, sheep, poultry, rabbits and ferrets, driving classes, horticulture and produce, arts and crafts.
Regional food and drink will be showcased in the Yorkshire Food Marquee.
Musical entertainment will be provided by the Swale Valley Stompers.
Show schedules and tickets are available now, priced £5 for adults, students and senior citizens – under fives go free – from tourist information centres in Thirsk and Northallerton.
These give a saving of £2 over the on-the-day adult ticket price of £7 (concessions £5).
