A MAN will appear in court this morning charged with the murder of a teenager.
The 21-year-old is accused of killing Ian Charlton, who was stabbed to death on Friday night.
The 18-year-old died from a single stab wound after he was found in Caldicot Close, Grangetown, Middlesbrough, at about 9pm.
Mr Charlton died at the scene despite the efforts of an off-duty nurse, who fought desperately to save him.
Police were called following reports that a man had been stabbed in the street.
Neighbour Jacqueline Mealing, 39, told how she fought to save the man’s life before the paramedics arrived at the scene at 9.08pm.
The community nurse said: “When I got outside I realised how serious it was and someone was shouting ‘He’s been stabbed, he’s been stabbed’. I ran along and tried to clear the crowd back.
“He was still breathing when I got there, but he had a large wound on the left side of his chest.”
Another woman who lives in the street said that the victim had been arguing with somebody and had been stabbed.
“Everywhere was taped off. We were not allowed out,” she said. “He was a really, really nice lad. I am shocked that this has happened to him.”
A post-mortem examination carried out on the teenager revealed he had died of a single stab wound.
A murder investigation was launched and the area was cordoned off by police while officers carried out door to door inquiries.
A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: “The 18-year-old man who died can be named as Ian Charlton, from the Grangetown area of Middlesbrough.
“A 21-year-old local man has been charged with murder and will appear at Teesside Magistrates’ Court today.
“A 17-year-old has been released on police bail pending police inquiries. Three other people, a 27-year-old man, a 43-year-old man and a 24-yearold woman have been released without charge.”
Anyone who may have witnessed the incident, but has yet to speak to an officer, is urged to call Redcar and Cleveland CID on 01642-326326.
