A BIRTHDAY party guest who left another reveller with horrific facial injuries after an unprovoked attack has been jailed for 20 months.

Anthony Williams was on a suspended prison sentence when he brutally assaulted Mark Atkins in a pub in Redcar, east Cleveland, last October.

Mr Atkins suffered a fractured nose and eye orbit and three chipped teeth, and needed an operation to repair the damage, a court heard.

The assault has also left the victim in fear of going out again and in considerable long-lasting pain, Judge Peter Armstrong was told.

Judge Armstrong imposed an 18-month sentence for the grievous bodily harm, and added two months from the suspended sentence.

Williams, of The Green, Redcar, was given a four-month sentence, suspended for a year, in January last year for another assault.

Judge Armstrong, sitting at Teesside Crown Court, told him: "It seems from the CCTV that it was a completely unprovoked attack upon Mr Atkins.

"You have attempted to make contact and apologise and the pre-sentence report clearly indicates that you are remorseful.

"It may well be that the background was a combination of alcohol and unlawful drugs that caused you to act in this way.

"That is not mitigation whatsoever, and it is no comfort to anyone that the person attacking them is under the influence of substances."

Williams admitted causing grievous bodily harm on October 7.
