PLANS to introduce new taxi ranks to towns and villages in Ryedale are to go ahead to improve transport links in the area.
After a review and consultation period by Ryedale District Council, three full-time taxi ranks will be designated in Malton and Pickering, as well as five part-time ranks.
Taxis have long been seen as an integral part of the transport system in Ryedale and they are widely used in areas where there is irregular public transport.
The new taxi ranks will be marked out on the road and are subject to a £30 fixed penalty notice for anyone other than a taxi using it as a parking space while the rank is active.
Laural Carr, taxi licensing officer for the council, said: "The additional ranks look set to provide a boost for transport needs throughout Ryedale and provide a vital service, allowing improved access to everyday services and facilities in the area."
The three full-time ranks will be a three vehicle rank in the Market Place in Malton, outside HSBC, a two vehicle rank at the train station forecourt in Malton and a two vehicle rank at Eastgate in Pickering, outside the new Co-op.
The part time ranks will operate between 6pm and 6am and are sited at Market Place car park in Helmsley, Main Street in Kirkbymoorside, Market Place in Pickering, Railway Street in Malton and in the Ropery car park in Pickering.
