HISTORY was brought to life as ten Roman soldiers in battle dress invaded a city yesterday.
They took shoppers in Newcastle city centre by surprise as they commandeered the pavements around Grey’s Monument.
The mini invasion marks the start of a weekend of Living Frontier events, bringing 2,000 years of history to life in vivid detail at sites along Hadrian’s Wall.
The event will include a pageant featuring armies of Romans, Vikings, Roundheads, Cavaliers and Border Reivers, as well as the largest Viking longboat ever set ablaze in the UK.
The festival will bring together hundreds of performers and re-enactors and their frontier stories.
The pageant will take place from 8pm tomorrow at Tynedale Rugby Club, Corbridge, Northumberland.
Entry is £10 for adults and £5 for concessions.
The festival website is at livingfrontier.com
