ONE of the smallest schools in North Yorkshire has won a local recycling competition to collect the most telephone directories.
St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, in Bishop Thornton, near Ripon, which has 28 pupils, was named the winner of the Yellow Pages recycling competition after each child collected 11 of the phone directories.
The school won £300 for their efforts and were also named the most improved school by Harrogate Borough Council, who co-organised the competition with the Yell Group, netting them another £50 in prize money.
Schools in the Harrogate district collected 4321 Yellow Pages for recycling, which together weigh more than eight tonnes.
Second prize of £200 went to Goldsborough CE Primary School, in Goldsborough, and the third prize of £100 went to Fountains Play Group and Pre-school, in Grantley, Ripon.
The directories will be recycled into house insulation, animal bedding or eggs cartons.
